BC Fire Code Change -- 1 May 2010

Smoke alarms were added to the BC Building Code in 1979. Homes built prior to 1979 were not required to have smoke alarms, however changes taking effect May 1 require smoke alarms to be installed in those homes.

As of May 1, smoke alarms will be required in older homes between sleeping areas and the rest of the dwelling. In consideration of the difficulty that may arise in complying with the new requirement, battery operated alarms are accepted in homes built before March 31 1979.
