Is the contractor really qualified? Check that the contractor has a permanent address, not just a PO box or address of an answering service. Check that the contractor has an electrical contractor's license from the BC Safety Authority.
Ask about the contractor's Field Safety Representative (FSR). The FSR is the person who signs declarations related to the electrical permit for the job and will be able to show an FSR card issued by the BC Safety Authority. Depending on the size of the company hired, the holder of the contractor's license may or may not be the same person who holds the FSR certificate.
Check that the contractor has third party liability insurance and that the contractor (and anyone else working at your job site or your home) is registered and current with WorkSafeBC, the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). Many home owners are surprised to learn that they may be required to obtain WCB coverage, or may be liable for any injury to workers at the home if those workers are not independently registered with WCB. Protect yourself by asking anyone you are considering hiring for their WorkSafeBC account number. Use that number to get an on-line clearance letter from WorkSafeBC before the contractor begins work.
